Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi, is the ancient Japanese technique of preserving wood (typically Japanese Cedar) by charring it with fire. The process involves charring the wood, cooling it, misting it with water, and finishing it with a natural oil. The result is a material that can stand up to extreme weather conditions and is fire-resistant without the need for chemical preservatives.
Here we used Western Red Cedar from the US Pacific Coast. The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.
