Getting ready for the stone tile installation.... A 3-mm thick polyethylene membrane -- to provide uncoupling (to minimize tile and grout cracking), waterproofing, vapor management, and heavy load distribution -- has been installed in each of the upstairs bathrooms. The membrane was anchored to the plywood-and-radiant-heat-tubing substrate using thin-set mortar. The grid structure of square cavities arranged with dovetailed channels creates a free-space underneath and a route for excess moisture and vapor to escape from the substrate that could otherwise cause damage to the tile layer above. The stone tile will be installed directly on top of the mat using the thin-set method.
